We offer cash, credit card or open up a bar tab (this is when bartender holds customers card under register ). If the customer is unhappy with the result, the bartender should smilingly offer to remake the cocktail to the patron's specifications free of charge, given the ingredients are not exceptional in cost or r If at any point the bartender runs into difficulty it is best for him or her to acknowledge the problem and attempt again. In this instance it is best for a bartender to happily declare that the drink shall be made if the customer is glad make it. Many people will deliberately try to overload the bartender by requesting a drink that the customer thinks the bartender has never heard of. Here the skill of the bartender is often put to the test. Once the guest is obviously ready to order, smile and ask what he, she, or the group, would like to drink. The overall focus is to make guests feel welcomed and happy as well as you appearing to give them all your attention. Smile when they arrive and make sure they know that you will be with them when you can. Make your guests feel comfortable in the same way you would make an old friend feel welcomed at home. If these steps are consistently applied whilst behind the bar, your daily work becomes much more manageable, and your work shifts can be a much more productive time (remember, bartenders are still there to make money!). When finished, you’ll merge this branch back into the development branch to queue it for the next release. When you start work on anything non-trivial, you create a feature branch. Feature branches (usually prefixed with ‘feature/’).Only updated by merging other branches into it. This branch represents the latest released / deployed codebase. Production branch (usually called ‘master’).This is your main development branch where all the changes destined for the next release are placed, either by directly committing small changes or by merging other branches (e.g. Development branch (usually called ‘develop’).The general idea of git-flow is to use the following branch structure in your repository: SourceTree 1.5 now integrates with git-flow and presents it to you in a friendly and intuitive way. Get new developers up to speed more quickly.Move between projects more easily with familiar branch structures.Adopting a standardised approach has many advantages: Using many separate branches in Git gives you lots of flexibility, but it can get complex. The idea was to standardise branching and merging when developing features, handling releases and managing hot fixes, in order to be consistent and gain the advantages of git’s ‘branchy’ development model. In early 2010, Vincent Driessen wrote an article called “A successful Git branching model” which recommended an approach called git-flow to use git branches in your development cycle. Transliteration history Archived at the Wayback Machine – history of the transliteration of Slavic languages into Latin alphabets.International Components for Unicode transliteration services ICU User Guide: Transforms.Slavic languages written in the Cyrillic or Glagolitic alphabets.Malayalam: see Romanization of Malayalam.Devanagari: see Devanagari transliteration.Transliteration of Ancient Egyptian ( see also Egyptian hieroglyphs). Some languages and scripts present particular difficulties to transcribers. Many languages have phonemic sounds, such as click consonants, which are quite unlike any phoneme in the language into which they are being transliterated. This sound is not present in most forms of English and is often transliterated as "kh" as in Nikita Khrushchev. It is pronounced as the voiceless velar fricative /x/, like the Scottish pronunciation of ⟨ch⟩ in "lo ch". Another example is the Russian letter "Х" (kha). The letter is sometimes transliterated into "g", sometimes into "q" and rarely even into "k" in English. It is pronounced, in literary Arabic, approximately like English, except that the tongue makes contact not on the soft palate but on the uvula, but the pronunciation varies between different dialects of Arabic. The initial letter 'h' reflecting the historical rough breathing in words such as Ellēnikē should logically be omitted in transcription from Koine Greek on, and from transliteration from 1982 on, but it is nonetheless frequently encountered.Ī simple example of difficulties in transliteration is the Arabic letter qāf. A transcription distinguishes them, but this is no requirement for a transliteration. (As the ancient pronunciation of ⟨η⟩ was, it is often transliterated as an ⟨e⟩ with a macron, even for modern texts.) On the other hand, ⟨ευ⟩ is sometimes pronounced and sometimes, depending on the following sound. In Modern Greek, the letters ⟨η⟩ ⟨ι⟩ ⟨υ⟩ and the letter combinations ⟨ει⟩ ⟨oι⟩ ⟨υι⟩ are pronounced (except when pronounced as semivowels), and a modern transcription renders them all as ⟨i⟩ but a transliteration distinguishes them, for example by transliterating to ⟨ē⟩ ⟨i⟩ ⟨y⟩ and ⟨ei⟩ ⟨oi⟩ ⟨yi⟩. However, unsystematic transliteration is common. In practice, there are some mixed transliteration/transcription systems that transliterate a part of the original script and transcribe the rest.įor many script pairs, there are one or more standard transliteration systems. Transliteration may be very close to transcription if the relations between letters and sounds are similar in both languages. Still, most systems of transliteration map the letters of the source script to letters pronounced similarly in the target script, for some specific pair of source and target language. Transliteration is opposed to transcription, which maps the sounds of one language into a writing system. Most transliteration systems are one-to-one, so a reader who knows the system can reconstruct the original spelling. Systematic transliteration is a mapping from one system of writing into another, typically grapheme to grapheme. Angle brackets may also be used to set off characters in the original script. While differentiation is lost in the case of, note how the letter shape ⟨κ⟩ becomes either or depending on the vowel that follows it.Īngle brackets ⟨ ⟩ may be used to set off transliteration, as opposed to slashes / / for phonemic transcription and square brackets for phonetic transcription. Transcription, conversely, seeks to capture sound rather than spelling " Ελληνική Δημοκρατία" corresponds to in the International Phonetic Alphabet. Thus, in the Greek above example, ⟨λλ⟩ is transliterated ⟨ll⟩ though it is pronounced, ⟨Δ⟩ is transliterated ⟨D⟩ though pronounced, and ⟨η⟩ is transliterated ⟨ē⟩, though it is pronounced (exactly like ⟨ι⟩) and is not long. Transliteration is not primarily concerned with representing the sounds of the original but rather with representing the characters, ideally accurately and unambiguously. įor instance, for the Modern Greek term " Ελληνική Δημοκρατία", which is usually translated as " Hellenic Republic", the usual transliteration to Latin script is ⟨Ellēnikḗ Dēmokratía⟩, and the name for Russia in Cyrillic script, " Россия", is usually transliterated as ⟨Rossiya⟩. Transliteration is a type of conversion of a text from one script to another that involves swapping letters (thus trans- + liter-) in predictable ways, such as Greek ⟨ α⟩ → ⟨ a⟩, Cyrillic ⟨ д⟩ → ⟨ d⟩, Greek ⟨ χ⟩ → the digraph ⟨ ch⟩, Armenian ⟨ ն⟩ → ⟨ n⟩ or Latin ⟨ æ⟩ → ⟨ ae⟩.
Here is an example emission spectrum from a planetary nebula taken by Prof. We will talk about these later, but there are objects known as planetary nebulae that also give off emission spectra. For this reason, the glowing red emission nebulae found surrounding massive stars are often referred to as " HII Regions." The strongest hydrogen line in the visible part of the spectrum is H-alpha at 656.3 nm, which is in the red part of the spectrum.Īstronomers refer to neutral hydrogen atoms as HI (pronounced "H-one") and they refer to ionized hydrogen nuclei as HII ("H-two"). Because the clouds are primarily made of hydrogen, the spectrum of a typical emission nebula shows strong hydrogen emission lines. The free electrons can recombine with the hydrogen nuclei, and then, as they cascade down to the ground state, they emit photons. The electrons in the H atoms absorb so much energy that they are actually stripped completely from the H atoms, creating a sea of hydrogen nuclei and free electrons. The massive stars give off a lot of ultraviolet light, which the hydrogen gas absorbs. For example, in the image below of massive stars in NGC 6357, you see a large region of glowing red emission nebula surrounding a number of massive stars (although there is no way to tell just from looking at the picture that they are massive stars). One point we glossed over in that lesson is: How do the electrons get into the higher energy levels in the first place? In the case of emission nebulae, there is a clue usually quite apparent in the image. As they move down to the ground state, they will emit photons of specific energies, producing emission lines at those specific energies. If you refer to the lesson on the production of emission lines, what is required for a cloud of gas to emit an emission spectrum is for electrons in the gas to be in energy levels above level 1. Emission NebulaeĪs the name implies, emission nebulae emit emission spectra, not continuous or absorption spectra. Clouds that glow a blue color very similar to the blue of our sky.Īt this point, let's address the physical processes responsible for the appearance of these various nebulae, and give them more descriptive names.Dark clouds that appear to block all or most of the light of stars or bright clouds behind them.Clouds that glow an almost uniform, bright red.If you look at the images at the links above in some depth, you'll see some or all of the following: All of these objects are called nebulae, a word which is Latin for "cloud." Taken as a whole, the gas and dust that fills the space between stars is called the interstellar medium. In all of these images, you see different regions of space that are either filled with what appears to be glowing gas (similar to a neon light), or dark regions that are obscuring the stars behind them. APOD: The Carina Nebula Panorama from Hubble.APOD: Horsehead Nebula (note, the Horsehead is a small part of the Orion Nebula). Here are some images that show some obvious examples of regions in space that contain some material between the stars: It is true that space is so empty that it is a more perfect vacuum than we can create in the laboratory on Earth however, space is not completely empty. You have also probably been told that outer space is a “vacuum”-that is, that, other than stars and planets, it is very empty. When you observe the night sky, you see the stars as pinpoints of light against a black background. Stellar Evolution Stage 1: Giant Molecular Cloud. Version Travis CI Quality Coverage Gittip. The keyboard is - more on the keyboard in a bit - but not the main navigation controls. Oh, and memorize the location of these four buttons the moment you take your Sidekick out of the box, because they're not backlit. The keyboard is exquisite - I'm fast and accurate on it, which is all you can really ask for Granted, T-Mobile did everything it could to stay true to the Sidekick formula, and that meant splitting the four buttons across either end of the display - and the good news is that you can press and hold Back (which is at the bottom left) to accomplish the same thing. Considering how often Home comes into play while you're using an Android-powered device, this seems like a really odd oversight. I found that I could swivel my thumb up to hit it when holding the phone normally with my right hand, but not my left - and I have fairly large hands. The strangest nuance, though, has to be the Home button, which lies on the upper right of the front when you're in portrait mode. Wacky, right? Likewise, the 3.5mm headphone jack is on the other end of the same edge, right next to the volume rocker - not exactly "normal" placement. For example, the power button is on the front right edge if you're holding the phone landscape, which equates to the lower left if you're holding it portrait. Looking at the controls and ports, some of them are going to be pretty foreign if you're not coming from an older Sidekick. One small bit of good news is that the casing is entirely matte, which should do a far better job skirting damage (scuffs, minor scratches, and the like) from normal use than Samsung's famously glossy Galaxy S devices do. For instance, there's not a lick of soft touch anywhere to be found on the top or bottom - it's all hard plastic. There's definitely a market for this class of device.Īnd let me be clear: this isn't a cheesy, rickety, or poorly-made device, nor does it look particularly cheap - it just lacks that certain je ne sais quoi that higher-end phones usually exude. In other words, I don't think it's a bad thing that this isn't as luxurious of a device as the LX was for its day - if anything, the 4G is truer to the Sidekick brand than the LX ever was. And my hypothesis here is underscored by the pricing - back in the day, the LX went for $199.99 on contract after rebate, whereas the 4G has launched at $99.99. With the 4G, though, the story has changed the myTouch and G brands are in full effect for the mainstream consumer and high-end markets, which gives the Sidekick brand an opportunity to return to its teen-centric, hypersocial roots. T-Mobile wanted a high-end device that carried over Sidekick familiarity. I don't think it's intended to be quite as high-end, and in the the scheme of things, that makes sense: when the LX came out, it was trying to appeal to longtime Sidekick users who'd started to grow up, get grown-up jobs (hence the Exchange support), and have grown-up money to throw around. I wish I had a Sidekick LX 2009 (which I reviewed) handy for direct comparison, but from what I remember, the Sidekick 4G is clearly a half-step down the first time you look at it - it's chunkier and more plasticky than its predecessor.
